This painting is nearly twenty years old and I love it. It is one of the few paintings where I put as much effort into every inch of the background as I did to the subject. Right up to every edge, nothing was skipped. You can see where the carpet under the door is higher than other spots. You can see shadows from things that aren't in the photo. I no longer have my witch boots (or pirate boots, depending on how I feel that day), but this is a fun memento of them.
We get sentimental about some things. I would have had more of a problem throwing out these boots when they wore out if I didn't have a nice painting of them. If you are thinking of painting a still life, maybe paint one of something that is special to you. Ideally, the art piece will take up less space than the original object. Then you can unclutter your place of the original item when it has come to the end of its usefulness.
