Fracture Bunneh

I mentioned the Fracture Bunny that I "saw" in one of my Fracture Art pieces in my last post, so I HAD to write about it right away. Not that I believe anyone is suffering from cliffhangers- though it would be really rad if there were fans who cared that much- but because I don't want to mention something and then forget about it. Brain injuries are jerks like that. I adored this piece enough that I did not want to forget.

This was one of the non-purposeful Fracture Art pieces that I was talking about. I used a ruler, ink and markers to make all of the lines and fill in the colors in the shapes. Then I stared at the poster board from every angle until I saw a subject hiding in the fractures. This time I happened to see a rabbit. Unfortunately the only photograph I have is an old flash snapshot from 20 years ago. It is pretty bad quality but at least the flash shows off the gold and silver. In the future I might want to take a pre-outline photo. It might be fun for people to try to see subjects in the piece before it is revealed what I have found. Did they see the same thing? Something different? Nothing at all?

I really liked using the metallic sharpies for this series, because it allowed the original lines to continue to exist within the piece. The markers just added emphasis to the outline, which kind of allowed other people to see the same shape that I saw. I used silver for the outline and gold for the inner lines. It was also super cool that if you squinted the object would fade away. Was even more cool to walk up to the piece from the side, at which point it just looked like a random pattern of orange, gray and black. But then you would come up to it at just the right angle where light hit the silver and gold and it would pop out! I don't mind that this art is pretty low-brow. I love it, and I love this whole series that I made.

Once when I was at the student art store, they had several packages of this orange poster board that had gotten wet on one side. I was talking by and they were like, "hey you buy a lot of supplies here. Want a bunch of free poster board?" Listen at my job I made $7 an hour. Why, yes I would like a bunch of free poster board for my art pieces- all I had to do was cut a few inches off of one side. I made so much art from those, it was ridiculous. Fracture Art, still life, nude studies, using chalk, ink, acrylic, I mean ANYTHING was game. That period of time was some of the greatest art I've ever done. Part because free poster board and ink made for art that cost almost nothing so I didn't hold back, but also because it allowed me to have color while only using black and white medium. That is really quite the swerve for someone whose art was usually only black and white. Think about this oddness: orange was the NEUTRAL space and color. So basic, but so much fun. I'm too dark for that much playfulness anymore, but I enjoy reminiscing. It is rare for me to have memories at all, let alone good ones.
